Went to the optometrist today.
Blurry vision in my left eye.
Farsighted.
Ordered glasses.
Suck. Suck. Suck.
I needed a shoulder to cry on. Someone who would understand, sympethize, make me feel better.
So I called my very sweet, sensitive brother and unloaded the most awesome news.
This is how the conversation went...
I said, "I just ordered my glasses."
He said, "Did you get to pick out your cane, too?"
I answered, "No, but my walker is hot pink with tennis balls on the feet."
And he replied, "When does the catheter arrive?"
And I retorted, "No catheter, but my IV is running nicely."
He came back with, "How many cats do you have now?"
I threw it back with, "Five, and they attack the pink flamingo in my front yard."
He responded with, "You're old now."
And I finished with, "Fuck you."
And he giggled.
Our conversations would do a Judd Apatow movie proud.
This is how I hope my glasses make me look...ha.

Pain In The Ass
I have one. Literally.
My back is feeling fine (thanks in part to my new inversion table and adjustments), but I have this ache in my left cheek when I bend straight over or to the left.
I did some research, and talked to my friend the Ironman, and what we've come up with is it's my piriformis muscle. Maybe I've been overcompensating to make sure my back stays pain-free, and I've probably not stretched enough before my runs.
Either way, it's annoying. Not really painful, but it could be if I get in a position that aggrevates it.
One of the treatments is deep tissue massage. Oh yeah. Bring on the "assage". Ha.
My brother the doctor is out of town, but I'll ask him what he thinks when he gets back. Until then, stretch, stretch, stretch.
Weekend Playlist 7/24/09
Lots of music action this weekend:
Gogol Bordello - too much to list.
Greg Laswell - again, too much to list.
Lou Barlow - Emoh
Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Son, Ambulance - Key
Spinnerette - Spinnerette
Shocking Pinks - Shocking Pinks
Eels - Hombre Lobo
The English Beat - I Just Can't Stop It
It was also a mixed-tape weekend. I've loaded up some of my favorite grade-school/Jr. High songs from the following albums:
Hall and Oats - Voices (1980)
This album had "Kiss On My List", and we used to skate to this and also play it at slumber parties. Totally cool to dance to, also. In your jammies.
Hall and Oats - Private Eyes (1981)
"Private Eyes" felt like a grown-up song to us. We used to sing it on the playground and the recess teachers would get mad. ???
The Go-Go's - Beauty and the Beat (1981)
This was my first record - I got it for my 9th birthday and my friend Julie and I memorized every lyric in every song, and made up dances too. We were so rad. What's funny is listening to this entire record, I heard definite nuances of X....
Styx - Kilroy Was Here (1983)
Ha! Curt Hassebrock, who had that cool factor back in grade school before we knew what that was, would go around and sing "Domo Origato Mr. Robato" in music class and make the robot moves on us gals.
Survivor - Vital Signs (1984)
"High On You". Oh my. So dreamy. And what a great video!! Was played at the sock hops.
Journey - Escape (1981)
"Don't Stop Believin" and "Open Arms" were always on the radio. Casey Kasem's American Top 40 on Sunday's and in the car was where I heard it the most.
Asia - Asia (1981)
"Heat Of The Moment" and "Only Time Will Tell". Thank you Judd Apatow for bringing back these most awesome tunes in "The 40 Year Old Virgin". Ahhhh....
REO Speedwagon - Hi Infidelity (1981)
"Take It On The Run" and "Keep On Loving You" were great for couples skate. Even better when that hot older guy from Jr. High asked you to dance/skate. Man, those were the days!

Movie Review
3 1/2 stars (out of 4)
Okay. Those of you who know me won't be surprised that I went to see this movie. I love horror movies. Even if it looks completely cheese toasty, I am there.
Totally worth my time. The cheese was slightly melted, but nowhere near fondu. This movie is a tasty treat for the scary movie lovers out there.
What made this movie good, for me, was the following:
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
1. You know when a character is in the bathroom looking at the medicine cabinet mirror, and then slides it open to get some meds out? Cue anticipatory music, cue character sliding the mirror shut, cue surprise person standing behind them? HA! This movie was full of "someone's watching/sneaking up behind you/hiding in the shadows" techniques, and they rarely delivered. Which was cool, because you never let yourself off the hook - you were constantly on edge, expecting it.
2. The use of art and blacklights. Fantastic. And creepy. And creative. And I wish I could paint like Esther The Orphan.
3. Esther The Orphan was spooky. She started off speaking in an American accent, but as the film wore on, it developed into a deep, schlocky Eastern European accent, almost Russian.
4. Vera Farmiga. I can watch her in anything. She's hotter than Ms. Jolie. Eye candy for the straight gals. Just sayin.
5. The last 20 minutes. One of the better plot twists. A collective gasp, and then laughter, and then "Aw yeaaaaaah" from the crowd. BTW, saw it at the Esquire. Always a diverse and rowdy crowd, an added bonus to any scary movie theater-going experience.
It was a little Bad Seed and Joshua and The Good Son in places, but that's to be expected with this type of plot - can't really get away from that.

Wakey Wakey Eggs N Bakey
It's Monday - wake the heck up.
Swinging Utters. Saw them at the Punk Rock Bowling show in Las Vegas 2006. Great live - I don't think they tour outside of Cali anymore...

I Got Skillz
My mom bought me an inversion table for my birthday. It arrived yesterday.
I put it together this afternoon, all by myself.
It was a very proud moment for me, because I am TERRIBLE at directions. Sometimes I'm surprised I can work a doorknob. But I must be getting better, because I did replace the window master control switch in my Explorer all by myself a couple weeks ago.
I'm feeling very empowered now.
So I've tried it out. The first time was strange - I didn't go the full 180˚, but almost.
I like it. It feels good.
I have one cool mama - she bought one for my brother as well. Progressive!!
Thanks Mom!!!!!!!!

Found and probably needs a home
Some friends and I went to Newstead Public House tonight. While were were standing by my car looking at my scraped-up tire (yup), and we saw a little ball of dirty white fur come around the corner.
It was a Shih Tzu. Or quite possibly a Shih-Poo, as it's hair had some poodle-wave to it. Either way, cute as the dickens.
My friend crouched down and called it over. The dog nearly ran into her arms.
He is dirty, good teeth, about as big as oliver, and a boy. No collar, and looked very worse for the wear. I don't think he's had a home for awhile.
Oliver is getting his shots (overdue) tomorrow, so there was no way I was taking the stray home tonight. So my friends took him home. They called me from the car on the way home, and said that he was giving them lots of love. Just like Oliver does.
We're going to put a posting on CL, and will let the shelters know about him, but if no one claims him I thought I'd post to see if anyone is looking for a near-perfect dog. Shih Tzu's are such a wonderful breed of dog, great in apartments/lofts, good-natured, loyal, clean (they DON'T SHED!) and happy.
The picture is close to what he looks like.
***UPDATE***
The owner has been found, my friends are just waiting for him to pick up the dog.

Tornado in my hometown last night
Yes, It's Real
Toot Toot
It's my Adoption Day today.
I would have completely forgotten it, had it not been for my Aunt Deb.
I got home from class late last night, and found a nice surprise in my mailbox. Giftcards to two of my favorite stores, and a sweet card.
Thanks Deb & Family! Made my night...
I was born on May 27th, and adopted on July 9th. Just a wee babe. The story goes, I started out with red hair, but it fell out and was replaced with golden locks that were curly and unruly. A year and three months later, my brother came along the natural way. We both have blonde hair, green eyes and are about the same height. It worked out fine.
My family threw me a party to tell me I was adopted. I don't remember how old I was, but it was around the age that Barbies were very important to me, so the news wasn't earth shattering - it was just another day I got presents. Smart.
My family is great - I'm lucky they chose me. I often wonder what farm I'd be stuck on had they not come along and picked me out of the cabbage patch.
So, now this Cabbage Patch kid has a couple of coolio giftcards to spend this weekend on something educational, entertaining and stylish. Doesn't get any better!

No Cookie Love
My coworker and I had some time on our hands at work recently. See below for the conversation we had via IM:
Kristin: So now I am owner of the cookies?
Kristin: Poor cookies...so unloved....so unwanted...so untasty
Nicole: I ate one and Mark ate one.
Kristin: Foster cookies.
Nicole: I walked down the isle and tried to give them homes in peoples tummies.
Kristin: Thanks for trying - you were good to act as a Case Manager for the foster cookies
Kristin: Sometimes foster cookies stay "in the system" and never do get adopted/eaten
Nicole: I tried. I don't want to see good cookies getting lost in the shuffle of life.
Kristin: And then they turn into maladjusted adult cookies
Kristin: I understand. I will see if I can get some sort of monthly stipend to care for the cookies
Nicole: good idea.
Nicole: take up donations?
Kristin: Yes! Or hold a fund raiser!
Nicole: Yes!
Nicole: Bake sale
Nicole: oh wait...
Kristin: Too close to home
Nicole: right
Kristin: Might scar the cookies
Kristin: The oven thing and all
Nicole: oh yeah.
The cookies are still sitting on my desk...on the edge...I hope they don't jump. Crumbles can be messy...

Friendship
I've heard many times, from many different people, that you don't get to pick your family, but you get to pick your friends and that's what makes them so special.
I believe that. To mesh with someone so truly, and deeply, is such a gift.
I didn't attend my HS reunion this past weekend, and I've been checking out the pics. Everyone looked so good, obviously having a ball, and I wish I could have been there.
I started to think about the good times I had in high school with many of the those people:
- Shawn made sure that my 16th birthday was unforgettable - she threw a small party, the guys came over, we watched Eddie Murphy Delirious, ate and drank, and had a great time. I also remember that I "fell asleep" at one point, and I woke up on her bed and found a note next to me. It was the sweetest note, basically telling me that she was glad we were friends, and that she hoped it was the best birthday ever. It was great, thanks to her. And obviously unforgettable.
- I remember riding in Tanya's car, listening to Salt-n-Pepa's "Push It", just singing at the top of our lungs. She was very artistic, positive, and embraced life back then. It's obvious, in getting to reconnect with her via FB and seeing the pics, that she's still living life with the same ferocity and vibrance as she did 20 years ago.
- Steve is one of my oldest friends. I've known him since the 2nd grade, and he lived a few short blocks from me. I've never known him to do or say anything mean or negative to anyone, ever. One of those progressive, pure souls that remains intact as the years progress. One of those few, good men. Oh, and since his dad was a dentist, he always brought those pink tablets to school that helped clean your teeth. Very cool!
- Phil was a lot of fun back in high school. And even though I was so concentrated on getting one guy or another to notice me doesn't mean that I didn't notice what a good person he was. It doesn't seem that much has changed there - and he looks happy and content, which is exactly what I would wish for him now. And do.
- Jason P. was my prom date. What a gentleman. Neither he nor I were dating anyone at the time, so I guess is seemed like a good idea to go together. To get to know each other a bit better before the big night, he used to call me up and ask if I wanted to go for a walk. We lived close to each other, and we'd end up at his house in the basement, where his room was. He was very into lifting and heavy metal, and we'd talk for hours. Nothing ever came of it, but we did have a good time at the dance. Again, a true gentleman.
- I'd also known Jodi R. since 2nd grade. Always into sports and full of energy, we were in Bluebirds together, played softball and she never failed to do the right thing, in any situation. She still looks very full of energy, and I don't doubt that she still carries her glove everywhere she goes, ready for that pick-up game.
- Carter. Well, what can I say. Always the life of the party, and from the pics, that moniker remains true. Wondering what he won the trophy for?
These people, who I spend the better part of my childhood with, are now adults, such as I am. And while we are very different people now, we surely still possess many of the same traits we had back then. It would have been so interesting to catch up, and really see what's changed and what's remained the same about us all.
I will definitely be making my 25th - no doubt we'll all be even wiser by then, but will still let the crazy out!

Lookin' Good, Chiquita!
The blonde in the pic, Maggie, is my best oldest girlfriend. How hot is she???!!! This photo was taken last week at our 20th high school reunion.
We went to Jr. High and High School together, and made every day very special. She was crazy back then, I could tell you some stories...but I will save them for her birthday, which is 9/9/09. Check back then for a recap of the many months of melee.
The stud in the picture with her is Curt Hassebrock. We both crushed on him hard, back in the day. He was the lead drummer, and made marching band a labor of love. He's still rocking, as you can see.
We've come a long way, baby!

Free time
I've got some, so I'm catching up.
Wrote on my Match Me Up blog. Quickly cathartic.
Made room (in my spare room) for my new Inversion table. It arrives this week. So excited. Ready to do some flipping.
Listening to some new music (new to me) - Midnight Movies and Shocking Pinks. KMac, they're on the way.
Ra Ra Riot is coming to the Firebird 9/20. Most awesome. Fun music, should be a good show.
Low key weekend - communed with nature, got wet, slept late, and skipped the fireworks.
Presentation tomorrow, so will be prepping tonight. Good times.
Jeez, can I be more boring? Guess I should sign out before I put myself to sleep.
